Welcome to the presentation of South African parishes of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the Cathedral of Saint Thomas the Apostle in Johannesburg - South Africa. Our church is the only Serbian Church in the whole African continent and is built in 1978. year. The foundations of the temple was consecrated bishop of the then Australian-New Zealand, Mr Nicholas. Since then, a priest was opsluzivalo this parish, a church, rectory and church property (approximately 2.5 hectares) have progressed and grew and today our church with a substance to become one of the most beautiful Orthodox churches in South Africa.
We are the Serbian people belonging to this parish, the most numerous was just in South Africa, and our parishioners still inhabit Botswana, then Zimbabwe, Zambia and other African states. There are plenty of reasons why no one has precise data on the number of emigrants here, but it is assumed that South Africa is somewhere around 20 000 Serbs.
The Serbian institutions and organizations here, there SCG Embassy in the capital Pretoria, the School of the Serbian language, club Zavicaj "I football team," White Eagles ". By far the largest number of Serbs in South Africa are gathering and coming to the church of St. Thomas in Johannesburg, especially on Christmas Eve and Easter when I gather a few thousand people, and also for St. Sava, Saint Vitus, vol. Tom and our other holidays.
The people gathered Sunday at the church to worship and to celebrate the holidays in a spacious church hall when organizing various programs, events or holiday table. For organizing meetings in the church and hall, are responsible members of the church council and members of the Kola Serbian Sisters "Kosovka girl."
It is our wish that you, dear visitors of this presentation, become familiar with at least a small part of life and activities in our parish and the church that is really of very great significance for all Orthodox Serbs who inhabit the African continent.
